A Note From Colleen
Hi, friend.
We’ve come to our 17th week here at The Gumption Gazette. Thank you!
Quick lesson: When we send emails/newsletters in our business, the number we want to watch is the ‘Open Rate’, as in what percentage of subscribers actually clicked and opened the newsletter.
The Gumption Gazette is averaging about 50%, which is fantastic. Many experts say a good ‘Open Rate’ is 20-30%.
Of course, this makes me happy and I want to do more good stuff.
If you’ll take a minute to respond to the poll below I can give you more of what’s helpful.
Thanks for being here.
Cheers,
Colleen Kochannek, Publisher

BUSINESS BASICS
Day #1 Building A To-Do List
Last week, we set you up for success by looking at Mindset issues; creating a To-Do list; and, committing to a consistent weekly schedule for both your office days and your marketing efforts (aka promote on social media).
Reminder: Marketing is the #1 priority (as a reminder) and will always be a #1 priority ⭐⭐⭐
Now, we’re looking at the day-to-day activities of a new business owner.
Keep in mind, you’re new to this whole online business thing. You don’t have a set routine or systems in place.
Where do you start? What should you do each day?
Start with marketing, always start with marketing.
First thing each work day:
Decide what you’ll promote (you may only have one product, so that’s an easy decision)
What your message is (are you doing a relationship building post or straight up asking for the sale. I follow the 80/20 rule of 80% relationship and trust building, 20% promotion)
Create the Facebook post (in whatever format you want) and post it!
Write the copy
Create the image
Film the video
Creating posts one-by-one is not a super efficient way of marketing; however, it it is effective in the beginning when we’re just figuring out our messaging and audience.
You’re learning how to create different formats (video, graphic, copy)
You’re learning how long it takes you to create and post a post
You’re learning what type of posts and messaging works.
You don’t want to batch content (create a bunch of content at one time) until you know what works.
Set aside 30 minutes per work day to create a marketing post and engage with previous posts.
Take the time to review what’s working or not.
In time, you’ll have a better idea what kind of messaging works and you will be able to batch promotional content (and save lots of time).
LIFE REIMAGINED
I finally broke out of the ‘200-view jail’ on TikTok. If you know, you know.
Until the message ‘hits’ you’re typically stuck at around 200 views. I hit 644 the other day!
Why? I’ve gotten way more targeted in my messaging - all around our 3rd Act and how it seems to come a surprise that we have these decades ahead of us.
What I am learning is many of us do not have a plan for this time, me included.
But, and you know what I am going to say, I do believe a simple online business can play a huge role in setting up a wonderful 3rd Act.
What’s your 3rd Act plan? Is your online business a big player in your vision? Hit REPLY and share your vision with me. I’d really enjoy knowing.
QUICK WINS
This is really not so much of a Quick Win as a PSA: If you live in cicada country, do not let your dog eat them. Besides being incredibly disgusting to witness, they wreak havoc on their tummies. No further details are necessary.😘
BTW: Cicadas are gross, but not poisonous.
In St. Louis, where I am, they are supposed to start disappearing in early June. Other areas, like Tennessee, have a much longer window (sorry about that).
If you’re overseas and have no idea what I am talking about, count yourself lucky.
